Stockpiling – The Easy Way

I’m a big fan of stockpiling and I make a habit out of getting things for free. Not just samples, but regular-sized items from my local grocery and drug stores. For example, I will never pay for toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, mascara, foundation, hot sauce, band aids, Excedrin, gum, BBQ sauce and marinades because I know that the manufacturers of these products frequently issue coupons in the newspaper and I know that these products will go on sale and I’ll get them for free when I use the coupons during a sale. I have a whole other list of items that I won’t pay more than 50c for.

Lately I’ve been posting sales at our local grocery stores so that you can take advantage of sales, use your coupons and get products at ridiculously low prices. The point I wanted to make is that if you’re buying a double bundle of your local newspaper every Sunday (here in Atlanta, the AJC), you’ll more than likely to have plenty of coupons to stock up on the things you need at crazy low prices. But, since it's time consuming and leaves less time for me to research other amazing deals for my Affluent Pauper readers, I'm going to leave it up to the experts.

There are three primary ways to getting products at rock-bottom prices:

1) Keep a coupon file, become familiar with your store’s sales flyer and stock up when prices are low. However, this can be time consuming and may cost you more in the long run if you’re already low on time.
2) Utilize a service such at The Grocery Game. The website tracks pricing on 10,000 items in 126 supermarkets and drug chains nationwide. The list matches manufacturer's coupons with weekly specials and unadvertised deals, and is color-coded and easy to use: green for items that are free when purchased with a coupon; blue for goods that have hit bottom and should be stocked; and black for products that represent a good deal but haven't quite hit bottom. It tells you which newspaper the coupons were in for the current sales, so the key is to save your inserts and label them with the date and pull out the ones you want to use (great method if you’re not in to carting around a coupon file everywhere you go!). Subscribers pay approx. $10 every eight weeks for a list of local deals and unadvertised specials from one store ($5 for each additional store). You can get a trial to several stores for 30 days for $1. If you run the report weekly and are organized with your coupons, the membership fee will pay for itself several times over.
3) Utilize Coupon Mom. This website has reports similar to The Grocery Game, except that the reports are free. However, with free comes a downside – the reports are not color coded and you may find that because of the report lacks the easy to use functionality of The Grocery Game, you may not save as much. Also, Coupon Mom tends to list all sales, whereas The Grocery Game lists only the really good deals. But if you’re starting out and really want something free, it’s a good place to start.

You can utilize several blogs to track sales, but keep in mind that if you’re reading a bloggers report from California and you’re located in Atlanta, the deals in your local store may be different.

You can cut your grocery bill in more than half by utilizing a service that tracks sales and tells you which coupons to use. Reading the report and clipping coupons will take about ½ hour each week, but you’ll be astounded by your savings. We used to spend $800-$1000 per month on various grocery store and Walmart runs. We now spend about $80 per week for our grocery needs (including diapers and formula) and we’re able to purchase the latest products on the market for less than other people pay for no-label items. Last night we had BBQ swordfish and tuna fish for less than we used to pay for chicken.

If you’ve saved on your grocery bill by utilizing coupon/sales tracking services, leave a comment so others can see how possible it is!

Free Yogurt and Organic Dairy Coupons

You can get a free tub of creamy Oikos greek yogurt with this coupon. The Stonyfield website says that it will only print once, no matter how many times you visit. Out of habit, I hit the back button several times and after I printed 8 copies, realized that the bar code was the same on each one, so it remains to be seen whether I can use all 8 at once. The coupon itself does not say one per person.

Stonyfield is a great website to sign up for. I got a coupon in the mail for free Yo-Mommy yogurt last week. The site might ask you to install a coupon printer, but I’ve found it to be a fast install. After you print the free Oikos yogurt coupon, another window will pop up and you’ll have the option to print out additional coupons for yogurt, milk, ice cream and other dairy products.

Dollar Tree Direct

OK, so we’ve all been there – we’ve gone down to the Dollar Store to find random items for parties, favors, etc., and they don’t quite have what we want, or they have what we want, but they don’t have enough in stock.

Save yourself the drive and check out the Dollar Tree website. They have lots of items, and for a limited time, they will ship your order to your local Dollar Tree for free! (there’s usually a small shipping charge). Everything is $1 per piece or under. They have a range of stemware on their site (if you need stemware for a wedding, it’s almost cheaper than renting it!), storage boxes, toys, puzzles, coloring books (including Disney and Fisher Price), crayons, teaching supplies, art and craft supplies (perfect for donating to schools), wedding favors and boxes, children’s party favors, trays and platters, floral supplies and much more! Thanks to Ginger for bringing this to my attention!

Cheap Eats at Mickey D’s and Captain D’s

This Sunday's Parade Magazine had two McDonalds coupons on it. One for a free Southern Style Chicken Biscuit with the purchase of a medium or large beverage and another for a Free Southern Style Chicken Sandwich with the purchase of any medium or large beverage.

Be sure to also grab the coupon on the back of the TV Guide in Sunday’s paper for the “buy one get one free” dinners at Captain D’s. Read my previous post on how to get absolutely free dinners at Captain D’s. These types of coupons are good to keep in a folder in the car. I was in the car running errands with two other people around dinnertime a couple of weeks ago and we stopped by for a free dinner!

My Shopping Trip August 18, 2008

So my tally between Publix and CVS for the below items came to exactly $46.00 (and I got $7 worth of ECBs from CVS to use for next week’s trip). Retail would have been $101.53. I still have some produce in the fridge, but it leaves me with some cash to buy some fresh fruits and veges later in the week and to get some formula from Walmart. This week we’re having roast chicken with garlic mashed potatoes, pumpkin and peas; breaded tilapia with herb rice and honey-glazed carrots; pot roast with ratatouille; and spaghetti with a fresh tomato marinara.

As you can see, today I stockpiled organic bread, stain remover, crayons and beef tips. The beef tips serve really well as “fast food” – I like to keep easy to prepare foods like this on hand. That way, when we’re in a time crunch, I can just go to the freezer and grab something that we stockpiled at a ridiculously low price. At Publix this week, if you buy the Hormel Roast for $6.99, you get the Publix version for free. It turns out that the Hormel Roast had a 55c off coupon on it, so I got both for $6.44 (essentially $3.22 a piece, much cheaper than handing over $30 for some mediocre Chinese takeout).

I’ve set an $80 per week grocery budget and have been doing well sticking to it. By “grocery budget”, I mean all food items, diapers, formula, medicines, paper items, etc., and I’ve been able to include fun things like cosmetics, coloring books and crayons in to that amount. It’s interesting to me that we’re spending an average of 65% less on groceries than we did just a few months ago, yet we’re actually eating better. Grocery shopping has also gone from a very stressful experience to something I actually look forward to. It’s a game now and I love seeing how much I can get for so little!

Free Caribou Coffee

If you have a Caribou Coffee Card and have never registered it on their site before, you can register your card from now through September 7th, 2008 to receive a $4 credit towards your next purchase.

My Shopping Trip - August 9th

We have quite a bit in our stockpile now and after taking inventory of the veges still in our fridge and the fruit in our bowl, I didnt have to buy much. We also got quite a few tomatoes, some eggplant and squash from a friend's yard. I spent a total of $35.40 and will get a free movie ticket in the mail because of the M&Ms purchase. Regular retail would have been $73.63 (ofcourse, I wouldn't normally stockpile that many M&Ms, but the price of the candy after coupons was much cheaper than the movie ticket and not to mention, I'm running out of my candy stash in my office). All the pens were FREE by using the printable BIC coupons on my blog this week, the iced tea was the Publix mystery item of the week, so it was only 1c. I also bought the coloring books for my little guy because they were only $1.25 and all the stickers will keep him occupied for a while (you'll find the same books for as much as $4.99 usually).
This week we're having, among other things, garlic and ginger BBQ pork and pinapple skewers with chive-infused rice (chives from my son's little herb garden), pasta matriciana (with lots of our friend's fresh tomatoes, our own oregano and parsley and the pasta and bacon stockpiled from previous weeks), oven-baked chicken breasts with chicken herb noodles and brocolli. And yes, as for the bread flour, I've started making my own bread. I like to buy "real" bread (not the all-the-high-fructose-corn-syrup-you-can-get type that is usually on sale). I estimate that it costs me 60c per loaf for traditional bread and around $1.10 for organic. So far I've made lots of different types, but that's a whole other blog topic!

Starbucks - $2 Afternoon Grande Drinks

OK, you guys know that I try to do all my posts only once or twice a week so I don’t fill up your in-box with mail, but this couldn’t wait…

For those caffeine addicts out there, here’s the deal…

Make a purchase at Starbucks any day before 2 p.m. from August 5-September 2 and take your receipt back the same day after 2 p.m. to any participating Starbucks (not applicable at Barnes and Noble Café) to get one Grande (16 fl oz) iced drink for only $2 plus tax, if applicable (those of you who drink Starbucks know what a good deal this is). Limit one drink per receipt.

I’m actually hoping that you’re not spending your hard-earned cash at Starbucks twice a day, but if I had a good friend or coworker who drank Starbucks every morning, I wouldn’t be afraid to hit them up every so often for their morning receipt, so I could enjoy a nice $2 treat. Or, if you happen to do Starbucks in the morning, offer someone else your receipt for their afternoon trip and share the love!

Free Dinner at Captain D’s

Sign up at the Captain D website and they’ll e-mail you a coupon good for free fish and fries or free chicken and fries. Now that's dinner for the family Affluent Pauper-style! Also, if you give them your birth date, they’ll send you another coupon each year.

Today’s Shopping Trip – August 4th

OK, so maybe I just set a shopping record. I went to CVS earlier today to purchase some items. I left my wallet at home (ugh!), but the kind CVS cashier offered to put my items aside until my return. After picking up the kids, watching my son ride his bike, cooking dinner, feeding and bathing the kids and cleaning the dishes, I had to get back to work, so my better half kindly offered to run back to CVS (with lots of coupons in hand). Here’s what happened…

I had a $25 ECB and he surrendered it, along with $1.81 for a grand total of $26.81. Below is a picture of what he purchased with it (believe it or not, the retail price on all this would have been $92.53 primarily due to the makeup). He actually paid full price for the two packs of gum and the gummies because the total amount was a deficit amount and he was stumped on what to do, so he bought the candy so that he would actually pay some sort of cash at the register (me: “I could have given you coupons for that!”). After he paid, we got $15.79 worth of ECBs back, in addition to a coupon for FREE CVS Brand Aspirin, a $3 coupon off Excedrin, $1 off CVS Pantyliners and $1 off Reach Floss. At this point the cashier said to my husband, “Wow! I’ve never seen anyone use coupons so well! We just paid you like $17 to take our stuff! Give my regards to your wife!”

That’s not all. I plan to send in the “buy $5 of Pert and Sure products and get a $5 rebate” coupon from the S 6/29 flyer.

Have I mentioned recently how much I truly LOVE CVS?

Grocery Stockpiling Deals – Week of August 3rd

There are deals to be had all over the place. Here are some deals at your local stores that are approx. 70% off. It pays to buy two copies of the AJC each week so you can utilize the coupons in the Smartsource and Redplum Inserts. Keep an eye out for the Kellogg’s “$10 rebate by mail” coupon in the R 8/3. If you send in 10 proofs of purchase and an original store receipt (must be all on the same receipt) of the Kellogg’s items specified on the rebate (Keebler cookies, poptarts, Eggo Waffles and more), you’ll get $10 back. This is potentially a moneymaker. You’ll notice that many of the Kellogg’s coupons in the R 8/3 are on sale this week at your local stores.

Especially if you’re a new mom and registering for a crib, stroller, high chair, bouncy chair, car seat and such, it may not be difficult to reach the requirements. When your friend sends out your shower invites indicating where you’ve registered, put a note in there about Amazon's free shipping.
