Free Kellogg’s After Rebate

If you printed the Kellogg’s coupons from my blog recently, now’s the time to put them to good use. If there’s a sale and you have coupons, this could potentially be a moneymaker. If you need more $1 coupons, click here (I managed to print seven).

Then, grab a free copy of Kellogg’s promotional magazine New You. I picked mine up at Publix. Kellogg’s corporate informs me that, believe it or not, they have no idea where they distribute the mag. as it’s done by a third party regionally. Go figure. (Update - you should be able to find it at the customer service desk of major grocery store chains in Atlanta, Nashville, Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill). Anyhow, inside is an official rebate order form that expires on 11/24/08 for “buy 4, get $10 gift check off pharmacy or health and beauty products for the store where you purchase any 4 participating Kellogg’s products.” The following are qualifying products: Kellogg’s All Bran 6 ct or larger, All-Bran Fiber drink mix 8ct or larger, All-Bran cereal 10 oz or larger, All-Bran crackers, Mini-Wheats cereal 10 oz or larger, Smart Start 10 oz or larger, Special K 10 oz or larger, Special K Bliss Bars 6 ct or larger, Special K Cereal Bars 6 ct or larger, Special K Protein Meal Bars 6 ct or larger, Special K Protein Snack Bars 6 ct or larger, Special K waffles, Special K20 Protein Water 4ct or larger, Special K20 Protein Water Mix 7ct or larger.

If you simply want to try a box of Kellogg’s Strawberry Oat Bites free after rebate, go here.

Free Chipotle on Fri Oct 31!

You can get a free meal at your local Chipotle this Friday from 6pm-close. You need to be dressed up like any item on the menu (salad, burrito, taco, etc.). Chipotle tells me that if you want to look like a burrito, a bit of tin foil on your head does not count – you need to really utilize the tin foil and look like a burrito! So... if you're really ambitious and out of aluminum foil, use the coupon in the Walgreens flyer to get a roll for 50c!

Taco Bell on Tuesday, Chipotle on Friday… well, gotta love not having to slave over a kitchen stove twice this week!

If you purchase a $50 gift certificate for $4, the general rule is that your bill must be over $100.

- 6 month club: Seven $25 gift certificates ($175 value) for $12
- 12 month club: Twelve $25 gift certificates and a $50 gift certificate ($350) for $24.

Your TV is Off, But It’s Costing You Money!

So I was outside earlier today playing with my kids and noticed that my home’s electricity meter was spinning fast. I wondered – hey, we’re outside and it’s the middle of the day, why is it spinning so fast?

When I walked inside, I realized it probably had a lot to do with the air conditioner and the clothes dryer. Either way, it got me thinking about our energy consumption and what I could possibly do to slow down that little spinning meter and reduce my monthly bill.

I walked around my house this evening just to see how plugged in we are. Right now, we have the following plugged in: 2 TVs (one is on, one is off), 2 cable receivers (one on, one off), 1 stereo, 2 cell phone chargers (neither have cell phones actually charging), 1 printer (I might use it later), 1 fax (not in use), 1 microwave (not in use), 1 stove (not in use), 2 DVD players (off), 2 laptops (both being used), 3 alarm clocks, 1 baby monitor and yikes - 28 light bulbs were on! 3 in the bathroom (we forgot to turn the lights off after we bathed the kids), 8 in the front hallway (someone just visited so we turned the light on - we actually have a 12 light chandelier, but ironically in the name of conservation, we decided not to replace the 4 that blew out), 2 in the office, 4 in the bedroom, 5 in the kitchen, 4 in the dining room and 2 in the living room). Most of the lights have since been switched off.

Well, it turns out that even if we were to turn all the lights off, we would still be using unnecessary energy and giving away precious dollars due to the fact that we have a ton of items plugged in that we aren’t using. For example, most people aren’t aware that 5% of the power drawn by cell phone chargers is actually used to charge phones. The other 95% is wasted when you leave it plugged into the wall, but not in to your phone. The cell phone charger is not the only energy waster in our homes. Plenty of products, from your TV, DVD player, printer, satellite TV receiver and your answering machine all waste energy when they’re plugged in to the wall, even if you’re not using them. Your oven may not be on, but the clock is! Appliances with continuous digital displays such as the microwave oven use electricity even when you’re not using it, and the TV, well, it’s just sitting there heating it’s tube waiting to be turned on.

A recent investigation of standby power use of 190 appliances in 10 Californian homes showed that the total standby power accounted for up to 26% of the total annual electricity use, with an average of 9%. The appliances with the largest standby losses were televisions, set-top boxes and printers.

From now on, the toaster and coffee maker will be unplugged when not in use and we’ll gradually invest in Smartstrips for our electronics.

Talk a walk around your place – how plugged in are you and how much could you save?

My Barilla Piccolini House Party

I hosted a Barilla Piccolini House Party this weekend.

What is a House Party? Well, companies spend billions of dollars every day marketing their products consumers, many of whom are ignoring the messages. Consumers are bored. We want excitement. This means that companies have to constantly come up with creative ways to market their products in order to appeal to a new generation that is accustomed to using TiVO to forward through the ads that these companies invest so much in. A House Party is a new, creative marketing technique that benefits, rather than bores consumers. If you regularly have friends over for dinner and you like to get free stuff, this will probably appeal to you. This is how it works…you sign up on the House Party site and apply to host a party (it’s free). You then fill out an online questionnaire and wait a couple of weeks for an e-mail indicating whether or not you have been accepted as a host.

I applied to host a Barilla Piccolini House Party and was accepted, along with 1050 other hosts (16,000 had applied). I was then set up with my own House Party website where I could invite my friends, post photos, download recipes and images for party favor bags and post comments on a forum. A few days later in the mail, I received a box of free goodies from the sponsor (Barilla). I then held my party on the same night as the other 1050 families, in effect, creating a big, exciting national party. We had a great time and everyone enjoyed their free gifts from Barilla.

It’s win/win marketing. The company gets a completely attentive audience who is keeping their product top of mind during before, during and after the party. The consumer gets to enjoy lots of free stuff.

Check out House Party to host a party of your own! There are usually several House Parties to choose from involving products ranging from chocolate to cars, toys, cheese, cleaning products and more.

The free goodie box contained: 2 boxes of Barilla Piccolini Pasta, an Andrea Bocelli CD, a Frommers 2008 Italy Book, 8 Mealtime Magic Books, 8 stress balls, 8 timers, a bottle opener, a set of silver wine glass charms, a cooking magazine, recipes and many coupons.

Lowes Commercial Appreciation Oct 22-24

I just got a flyer in the mail about this. Lowes is having Commercial Appreciation Days on Oct 22-24. On the Wednesday and Thursday, they’ll give out free coffee and donuts from approx 7am-10am. On Friday, they’ll give out free lunch from 11-2. On Friday, there will be several vendors on site and my local Lowes manager tells me that there are some pretty sweet door prizes, hats and t-shirts. He says that while this is primarily for customers who use Lowes for commercial purposes, any Lowes shopper can take advantage of this event. If you haven’t already signed up for mail from Lowes, I recommend that you do. Lowes frequently sends me coupons for $10 off any purchase of $25 or more. On the Lowes site, it appears that there isn’t a place to sign up to get on the mailing list. I called Lowes corporate offices and they recommend that you go to their Lowes Moving site. On the site, you can request a 10% off coupon and it will add you to a mailing list which will enable you to get these valuable coupons in the future.

Free Coloring Pages

For those of you with small children, you know how expensive coloring books can get, especially if you have a budding artist who can finish the entire book in a couple of coloring sessions. Well, here’s one more thing that you no longer need to spend money on – coloring books! Simply do an online search for “coloring pages” and you’ll find all types of pages that you can print out for your little one. Coloring pages are published online by big names like Crayola, Disney, PBS and by moms and dads like you. The themes are endless and as long as you have a printer, you can make your own coloring books based on your child’s interests or the occasion.
