Walgreens Coupon Misprint

If you pick up the Walgreens August 2008 EasySaver catalog, you'll notice that the coupons have an expiration date of 7/26/08. This is a misprint. I called Walgreens customer service and they actually expire on 8/30/08 and will scan normally at checkout.

Today's Shopping Trip

I’ve heard from a few of you that you miss my postings of how much I save on my shopping trips. So I did my weekly shopping trip today at Kroger and Walgreens. Today’s stockpile items: apple juice and body wash. Here’s what I bought today for $36.36 combining sales and coupons. Retail would have been $89.52. Oh, and I bought a big head of broccoli that didn’t make it in to the picture and I splurged $1.49 on that one little avocado.

And, after paying at Walgreens, I received a $3 coupon off my next purchase in addition to an unexpected coupon which entitles me to “buy 4, get $4, buy 8, get $10 off my next order of Colgate”. This was generated by me purchasing 3 Olay Ribbons body washes. Since you can always get toothpaste for under $1 using coupons, this translates to more free toothpaste! Yey! The machine also popped out a $3 off coupon for Dove Skin Vitalizer.

This week we’re having linguine with chicken and basil, tuna avocado wraps, fish with veggies, spaghetti and meatballs with salad. (I have the pasta, tuna, fish and meatballs in my stockpile and there are some veggies still in the fridge from last week). I may even get creative and try bacon-wrapped chicken breasts.

A stop at CVS and I purchased Revlon makeup using some ECBs and a $2 coupon. I got a lipstick (usually $12.99) for 19c and after paying, it gave me a new ECB worth $9.99. There's nothing like getting paid to buy lipstick!

We’re already stocked up on diapers from all the free diapers earlier this month at Walgreens and I’ll make a quick stop at Walmart later this week to get a can of formula (using a $3 off coupon of course).

To see how I managed to get all this for such a low price, check out what's on sale at your local store and use your coupons!

Free Diapers and Other Hot Grocery Deals – Week of July 20, 2008

Walgreens (Sun-Sat)
FREE DIAPERS (again!). Jumbo Walgreens Diapers are on sale again for $5.99 (reg $8.99). I really figured that Walgreens would pull the plug on this, but they obviously didn’t. Earlier this month, I was able to pick up 700 FREE diapers and 150 training pants for my little guys. I purchased the Comfort Stretch Premium diapers last time I did this – they have a couple of diapers less per pack than Comfort Stretch regular diapers, but they’re a much better diaper. Here’s how it’s done…

Get the red and white Walgreens pharmacy booklet that has $50 worth of coupons in it from the pharmacy. They give it out if you ask about their prescription plan and many employees will give you a blank stare, but it is something Walgreens offers. The coupon will take $2 off each pack of diapers you buy. Combine this with the $5 off 2 coupon in the July EasySaver booklet. Through July 28, if you buy 3 packs of diapers in one transaction, you’ll also get a $5 coupon towards your next purchase after you’ve paid.

Here’s the math on 3 packs of diapers ($5.99x3=17.97-$6 (pharmacy booklet coupons)-$7.50 (EasySaver booklet) = $4.47+.72 (tax) = $5.19 (this is what you’ll pay at the register). You’ll then get $5 back towards your next in-store purchase. So you’ll essentially get 3 packs for 19c which means you’re getting the diapers for free and paying only 19c in tax!

I asked two Walgreens employees at my local store and they said the coupons could be combined, but be sure to check with your local store as Walgreens is notoriously inconsistent with their policies. Having said that, I purchased all my diapers from three different stores and it worked each time. Hold on to your coupons. After they’ve scanned them, you do not have to surrender your Walgreens coupons and can use them again. Remember not to use the $5 coupon towards more diapers as it will not issue another $5 coupon.

Pantene Pro-V Beautiful Lengths Shampoo and Conditioners (reg $4.99). On sale 2/$8. Use $2 off 1 coupon in July P&G insert and then send in the $4 off 2 coupon in the Walgreens EasySaver catalog and after rebate, they’re FREE.
Garnier Hair Color (reg $7.99). Use 2/$10 coupon in 7/20 Walgreens flyer. Combine that with the $3 coupon that was in the 5/4 RedPlum and you’ll get it for $2.
Reynolds Aluminum Foil 20ft (reg $1.69). Use 89c ea 7/20 Walgreens flyer coupon and combine it with $1 off 2 Smartsource 6/22 coupon, and they it’s 39c per roll.
Bic Comfort 3 Disposable Razors (reg. $5.99). Use coupon in 7/20 Walgreens flyer and combine it with $2 off coupon in 7/20 Smartsource to get them for 99c.

CVS (Sun-Sat)
L'Oreal Vive Pro Hydra Gloss Shampoo and Conditioner (reg $5.49) is BOGO. Use your BOGO coupon that was in the 7/13 paper to get it for FREE.

Publix (Sun-Wed)
There are the usual BOGOs, but nothing spectacular this week. But you can get Suave Naturals Shampoo and Conditioners for only 33c (reg. $1.59). They’re on sale for $1 each, but if you use your $2 off 3 coupon that was in the 7/13 Redplum, you can get three of them for 33c each.

Kroger (Sun-Sat)
Fresh split chicken breast for $1.19 Ib.

It’s getting late, so I’ll update you on the rest tomorrow…

Why Buy New When You Can Trade?

A read an article some time ago about several families in San Francisco who decided to cut down on their consumption. They committed to each other that other than groceries, they would not buy any new items for a year. These were people with normal jobs, homes and kids, and they did this, not necessarily to be frugal, but they realized that much of what they had would end up in landfills eventually (I proposed this to my husband and he balked at me like I was going a tad too far with this frugal thing).

It got me thinking… how much stuff do we get rid of because we’ve outgrown the items or we’re simply bored of them? Is it really necessary for everything to be new or do we just buy new because it’s a little bit more convenient or perhaps because new stuff makes us feel good?

I thought back over some of my recent purchases. I could have picked up those new books at Amazon Used. I could have bought those toys at a local consignment store or had a toy exchange with some friends and my toddler wouldn’t have known the difference.

There are the obvious ways to avoid buying new – consignment stores and garage sales, but how about swapping? What a great way to shop that’s both frugal and environmentally friendly!

Freepeats allows parents to pick up gently-used baby, children, and maternity items for free from nearby parents who have finished with them. This organization currently has over 4500 members nationwide and well over 300 and growing in Atlanta. "Preparing for a baby's arrival is expensive," says founder Angie Wynne, "and so is raising one. Common estimates put the cost at $10,000 in the first year alone. And this is at a time when many families are trying to get by on one parent's income. At the same time, many of the expensive baby items parents spend their money on get used only for a very short time. There's still plenty of life left in them. If parents can find good-condition second-hand clothing, toys, and gear, they'll shave hundreds of dollars or more off that $10,000 total. Besides that, we'll keep usable items out of the landfills." Offerings have included bouncers, swings, cribs, infant formula, baby and toddler clothing, zoo tickets, diapers, strollers, high chairs, baby gyms, parenting books, toys, and more.

At Swaptree, you put together a list of books, cds, dvds, and video games that you want and then swap with people from all over the country for free. Swaptree will show you show you thousands of items that you could receive in trade for any item. So you don't spend time searching for potential trades, negotiating a trade with another user, or messing with point systems. Just list some items that you want to trade and Swaptree will show you everything you can get for them. All you have to do is pay the cost of media mail shipping (less than $2.50).

Freecycle’s mission is to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources & eases the burden on our landfills. They have almost 10,000 members in the Atlanta area and you can give and get all kinds of things.

I just checked Craigslist to see what I could pick up in my local area for free. Today I can get firewood, furniture, dirt, wallpaper, a tv, boxsprings, mulch, moving boxes and more. There’s even a lady over in Marietta offering free apples to anyone who wants to show up at her house and pick them off her tree! You can also barter your services at Craigslist. Hey, perhaps I can barter for a truck to get me some of that free mulch!

What are you considering buying new? What do you have lying around that you could trade? It’s worth thinking about.

Free Wireless Internet Access

A few months ago, my internet connection went out due to some local construction. So I packed up my laptop and headed to my local Starbucks, where I paid around $10 to get connected (now that I’m more conscious of the fact that there’s free stuff everywhere, I know I could have received two hours of free access if I had registered a Starbucks card, but at the time, in my desperation to finish an urgent deadline, I paid it).

If you need access to free wi-fi, there are plenty of local and nationwide locations where you can get free access. Just scratching the surface, you’ll find participating libraries, McDonalds, Panera, Krystal, Caribou Coffee, Atlanta Bread Co., Office Depot and Whole Foods.

Check out WifiFreeSpot for a list of spots in your area so you can log on without spending a dime. Keep in mind that companies are continually opening new locations or adding this feature for free, so if you see a chain that offers free wi-fi in one area (think McDonalds), chances are, it’s offered for free in your area too, so call before you head out the door. If you telecommute regularly, the price of gas is getting you down or you just simply need to get out of your usual workspace to clear your head, you may want to save the WifiFreeSpot link as a bookmark on your browser (or keep in mind your local locations in the event that construction kicks out your connection).

Questions from Readers... What Can I Freeze?

Last month, I got a bunch of free sour cream from Publix and had the same question. My assumption is that the texture of previously frozen sour cream may not be that great, so it might be more suitable in a cake recipe rather than on a baked potato, but I guess I’ll find out soon enough… (update: nope - sour cream or any cream in general doesnt store well. It comes out gritty!)

Check out the USDA site. It has some pretty decent information on what can be frozen, for how long, safety, quality, freshness, etc. It's a good site to bookmark so you can refer back to it when you're considering stockpiling items.

Do You Understand Your Credit Card Rewards and Perks?

You accumulate 25,000 in miles on your credit card and you get a free airline ticket, right? Well, one free airline ticket may not mean much if you don’t have enough cash to pay for other vacation-related expenses. What if you simply need more cash?

Yes, you may be able to redeem those items for cash or gift certificates!

I recently decided to redeem the miles on one of my credit cards. I went to the company’s website and lo and behold, the program had changed since I signed up a few years ago. All of a sudden, I realized that I could get not only miles, but gift certificates too. It turns out that for every 5,000 miles, I could get a $25 gift certificate. So I figured… well, I’ll cash in 25,000 miles and get $125 worth of gift certificates for use on groceries and at the hardware store. Then, in a not-so-prominent place, my eye caught a little button that said “get cash”. It turns out that, if I opted for the credit card company to send me a check, or credit my card balance, I could actually get $300! You’d think that they would offer the cash option as less of an incentive than gift certificates, but it turned out to be quite the opposite. So I opted for the cash and used the money to purchase a medium-sized freezer in order to stockpile frozen goods when they’re on sale.

What about perks? Warranties - Many large credit companies will offer to match a manufacturer’s warranty. In order words, if I purchased my freezer with cash, I would simply get the standard one-year manufacturer’s warranty. By taking the cash, putting it on a credit card that matches the warranty, and charging my freezer to the card, I got a two-year warranty. Identity theft - What type of identity theft assistance does your card offer? Some companies will refund the amount to you immediately upon reporting the issue, seeing you as innocent unless proven otherwise. Other cards will refund the amount only after a lengthy investigation. Travel Insurance - How much travel accident insurance does your card provide, if any? When you rent a car and charge it to you card, how much coverage do you really have?

If you don’t have a recent copy of your card’s terms, guidelines and programs, call your card to get a copy.
