Free Die Cast Car After Rebate

As a mother of two boys, this rebate appealed to me. You can get a free #43 1:64 scale NASCAR stock die cast car with the purchase of two rolls of Reynolds wrap between 6/4/09 and 4/30/10(exludes 20, 25 and 30 sq ft rolls). You can generally get a good deal on aluminum foil after coupons. Get your offer form here and send it in, along with your store receipt and UPCs before 5/15/10.

Amazing Victoria's Secret Clearance Deals in-Store

I headed over to Victoria's Secret today. I actually went in to try on a swimsuit, only to realize that I'm a season too late and they're stocking up for fall. I figured I'd put the visit to good use and check out the clearance rack. Whoa! Hot deal alert - everything on the clearance rack was marked down an additional 50%! They have pj pants for $7.50 (originally $34 and still $34 online) and a couple of silk slips for $17 (originally $68). There was also a huge selection of bras for $19.99. OK, so I just blew the savings from the apple juice. But some things are worth it! If you're not in the market to splurge for yourself, this is a hot deal if you have a bridal shower coming up.

Free/9 cent Organic Apple Juice at Publix

This is a stockopportunity for all those back-to-school lunchboxes! You'll either get a three pack of Apple & Eve organic juice for free (and actually get 41c back) or you'll get it for 9c, depending on your store.

Here's the deal... Publix has a 50c manufacturer's coupon in the June issue of Greenwise magazine and a $1 Publix coupon in orange and green Smart Summertime Savings flyer. Both flyers can be found for free at entrace to the store. The 50c coupon (says "do not double") is stackable with the $1 coupon, resulting in $1.50 savings on the juice, which typically retails for $1.59 for a three-pack. That means you'll get it for 9c. However, although the coupon clearly states "do not double", Publix cash registers will automatically double the coupon without manual override. I purchased 13 packs between two stores and at both stores, the staff decided not to bother with the manual override, even when the second store realized that they had to give me cash back! Either way, you'll love getting this organic juice on the cheap! Here's a pic. of my youngest organizing juice boxes for my oldest son.

Ben & Jerry's Buy One Get One Free Thru 8/31

Head to your local Ben & Jerry's scoop shop for "buy one get one free" sundaes every Monday until August 31st. More details here. Thanks to Money Saving Mom for finding this hot deal to cool us down this summer!

Free Starbucks Ice Cream

I don't usually post all the grocery freebies that you can get - I generally defer to The Grocery Game and Coupon Mom as the most efficient way to do that, but I just had to post this one. In the paper yesterday, there was a $2 coupon off Starbucks Ice Cream. Usually retailing at $3.60 a tub, its buy one get one free this week at Publix, so it pans out to $1.80. I had two coupons, so Starbucks essentially paid me to buy their ice cream. And the ice cream is soooo good! I bought the Mocha Frappucino ice cream and it's amazingly good. I don't drink coffee, but for some reason I like it in my ice cream and chocolate. So the next time I'm exhausted and my kids won't nap, I'll run over to my secret Starbucks stash in the freezer for a pick me up! Yey for free Starbucks!

If you want try your hand out at making all the awesome Starbucks goodies that you love, check out my previous post on How to Make Starbucks Treats at Home.

Update - So here I am enjoying my creamy deliciousness and I noticed on the pint that Starbucks ice cream has it's own site. Click here for a $1.50 off coupon. If you hit the back button a few times, you'll be able to print it twice. More ice cream please!

80% off at Restaurant.com

It's back again! From now until 6/25, you’ll only pay $2 for $25 gift certificates at Restaurant.com with code DISH. Go ahead, type in your zip code, and you’ll find that there are plenty of restaurants near you that participate.

Most restaurants have a stipulation that your bill needs to be at least $35 in order to use the certificate (so essentially, if your bill is $35, it will cost you the $2 that you paid for the certificate plus an additional $10 – that’s a meal for a steal and a great way to do date night on the cheap).

If you purchase a $50 gift certificate for $4, the general rule is that your bill must be over $100.

My fave is the dinner of the month club:
3 month club - Three $25 gift certificates ($75 value) for $6
6 month club – Seven $25 gift certificates ($175 value) for $12
12 month club – Twelve $25 gift certificates and a $50 gift certificate ($350) for $24.

Free Glidden Paint on June 25th

Mark your calendar! Glidden is giving out free 1 quart cans of paint on June 25th during their National Paint Giveway promotion. OK, so you can't paint a whole room on a quart of paint. But it may come in handy for a couple of projects around the house. I have a blue shelving unit in my son's room that I've wanted to see in a cream color for a while so my free can of paint will be put to good use!

Never Pay Full Price for a Newspaper Subscription

So my AJC newspaper subscription was up for renewal this week. I didn't always have home delivery. Here in the Atlanta area, you can get a bundle of two newspapers for $2.50 at a supermarket or gas station each Sunday. This is a good deal because I was spending $2.50, but saving around $100 a week by using the coupons. I did this for a while, but then last year decided to sign up for a double home delivery for around $150 (works out to $2.88). It's been SO worth it! I can wake up on a Sunday morning, retrieve my paper from the driveway, clip and file my coupons and don't have to worry about wasting gas to drive to the store to muddle through the paper looking for coupons.

But this week it was up for renewal. I received two identical invoices offering me 26 weeks for $79.49 each. Um... since I want a full year and not 26 weeks, that works out to $158.98 per paper x 2 = $317.96. What? They want me to pay $317.96 for something that I paid $150 for last year? (oh, and they'd give me a free $10 Target gift card if I sign up for their EZ Pay option). I don't think so! So I call up and explain that if I was to buy the double bundle at my local gas station, I would only be paying $130 over the course of a year and that I'm certainly not going to pay an extra $187.96 for the conveniene of getting it delivered to my driveway. The operator told me that last year I got a promotional rate. So I told her that I wanted another promotional rate. "um... let me see what we have..." says the operator. "oh yes, I can see that we have a promotional rate here for $83.63 for each paper." It really was that easy! So my rate did go up slightly, and yes, I'm paying 71c more each Sunday for the convenience of getting it in my driveway, but it pays for itself because I get to hang out with the kids on a Sunday morning and get my coupons clipped in 15 minutes rather than schlepping around for the paper early in the morning.
Bottom line: Never pay full price. It's as simple as asking for the promo rate - they always have one!
Update - After reading this post, a friend of mine just tried to call and get the $83.63 rate and the rep. wouldn't give it to her saying that they weren't aware of the offer and that she needed a promo code. Being that I didn't need a promo code and that the newspaper simply offered me the deal, I called to investigate. It turns out that different customers are given different rates. I explained to the customer service rep that, although I appreciate being given the rate, it is rather ludicrous that my friend can't get the same deal. To cut a long story short, it did take several minutes and a chat with a supervisor, but she was able to get the same rate. If anyone has knowledge on whether AJC customer service reps. work on commission or how their promotions work, please let me know!

Side by Side Shop: Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods

Ever wondered which has the better deal - Trader Joes or Whole Foods? Ms. Smiley of Seek and Find Shops, in this guest post, has compiled research that may surprise you:

As a single gal who tries to feed herself something interesting and healthy-ish on a semi-daily basis, I’m often wondering whether I should head to the gorgeously designed and sensory-overloading Whole Foods for the slightly pricey a la carte dinner trip or skip on over to the more intimate and often times friendlier Trader Joe’s for an easy all-in-one budget-friendly frozen meal. Either way, I’m likely spending more money “eating out” at these grocery stores rather than doing my shopping all at once. With my recent layoff and increasingly limited funds, I needed to get my act together.

Armed with an Affluent Pauper designed grocery list of items anyone could build several great meals from, I embarked on my price-comp trips to Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, probably two of the most widely known grocery stores selling organic and environmentally conscious food products.

My local Trader Joe’s is similar in scale to a small-town neighborhood grocery store, with limited advertising, simple displays and signage that appears to be handwritten. Learning to read the pricing may take a minute but once you get the hang of it, it’s easy.

The Whole Foods grocery store, on the other hand, is about the size of a Target and it’s very apparent that no expense is spared in the marketing and design departments. The experience of walking through the doors of this huge store can be mind-boggling and overwhelming, but once you get the lay of the land, it can be a new adventure every time you shop, since you’ll likely discover a new aisle every time you shop.

Of the 40 items on my list, I found 30 at Trader Joe’s and 35 at Whole Foods. I quickly realized that Trader Joe’s sells more store-brand items than I’m used to seeing. For example, when searching for my favorite refrigerated national soymilk brand, Trader Joe’s did not sell it or any other national brand, they just sold their own. Whole Foods, though, did offer my favorite brand alongside their soymilk and a few other brands as well.

In comparison to Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s seems to have the market cornered in the convenience food selection, which is great for me and any parents looking for quick and easy meals for the whole family. Now, if you are more interested in making sure the majority of your items are organic, Trader Joe’s puts in a good effort here, but it’s a slam-dunk for Whole Foods. Many of their 365™ Everyday Value store-brand products are certified organic, and if they don’t have an organic version, they sell another company’s product to fill the void.

Savings-wise, it was back and forth between the stores, and of the 27 items that could be found in both stores, Trader Joes was $1.90 cheaper than Whole Foods. At the end of the day, both stores are closer in price than I expected and my decision to shop at one over the other will likely depend on their sales and the coupons in my organizer.

For those of you looking to save even more dough, your local Whole Foods provides you with a variety of ways to save including their Whole Deals coupon/recipe book (coupons available in-store only), a weekly specials flyer (in-store/online), Thrifty Thursday tours, Dine for Less Dinner Clubs and they credit you 5 to 10 cents for bringing your own bags. In addition to their lower cost store-brand products, Trader Joes provides you with a Fearless Flyer newsletter (in-store/online) showcasing the products they have on sale.

To see the shopping list in full with pricing, take a look at the document below.
Trader Joes vs. Whole Foods Cost Analysis

- Ms. Smiley

Thanks so much for doing the legwork for us on this one! I had assumed that Trader Joe's would be significantly less expensive than Whole Foods, so this was eye-opening for me.

AMC Summer Movie Camp

AMC is offering $1 admission on Wednesdays from June 17-August 5th. Go to the AMC site for participating locations and movie listings. All proceeds will benefit the Variety Children's Charity and the Will Rogers Institute.

Regal Cinemas Free Family Film Festival

Regal's annual Free Family Film Festival is back. You can watch free rated G and PG movies each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10am thru July 30th. Go to the Regal Family Film Festival site for a search by state listing of participating theatres and movie listings.

Free Combo Meal at Chick-fil-A on July 10

Chick-fil-A's annual Cow Appreciation Day is back! Head off to Chick-fil-A on July 10 fully dressed as a cow and receive a free combo meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner). If you can't quite do the full attire (if you're just wearing a shirt, hat, etc.), you'll still get a free entree for your effort. OK, so I'm generally of the opinion that if you're really got to work for your freebie, then it's not really a freebie, but this is actually a really fun event if you have kids, so go ahead and give it a try! No costume? No worries! Chick-fil-A has a "costume kit" on their site where you can print out some cutouts to make your own basic costume and they have cute photo suggestions (white t-shirt and pants or a dress with black dots will be easy).

What can you get for free or inexpensively at JCPenney? From now until June 21, enter code GR8DAD online at JCPenney and you'll get $10 off any $10 purchase. I also received a coupon in the mail that I can use in the store by being a member of the JCP Rewards program (click on the link on the bottom of their homepage) and they often have great sales, so they're a good mailing list to be on! Some items you can get at their hot sales? A 70pc tool set with cordless screwdriver or a BBQ tool set with steak knives for $19.99 (reduced from $42) - your price $9.99 plus a small shipping fee after the $10 coupon! That's how to give a great gift Affluent Pauper-style when you don't have alot of cash to spare!

$10 off $25 at Sherwin Williams

Doing any painting this weekend? Then you'll need this coupon for $10 off any $25 purchase at Sherwin Williams. Wish I had this last month when I re-painted my office! Valid thru 7/31/09. While you're there, check out their line of low-VOC environmentally-friendly paint.

Free Beverages at Seattle's Best thru June 18

Seattle's Best at Borders is giving out free beverages again! Use this coupon to get a free 12oz coffee through June 18. I like that it's for "beverages" rather than just coffee this time. I don't drink coffee, but I'm always up for some hot chocolate.

Super Why Free PlayDate at Toys R Us - June 13

My 4 year old loves Super Why. That's why we're headed to Toys R Us tomorrow (Saturday, June 13) for the Super Why playdate from 12-2. He'll get to have some fun with storytime, alphabet bingo and coloring. They're also giving out a free mask and other giveaways.

Free Chocolate at Godiva

Oh yeah... there is nothing like free chocolate! Join Godiva Rewards to receive one piece of free chocolate every month, free shipping on one order and a free gift for each month that you spend $10 or more. OK, so a little piece of chocolate each month isn't enough to take a trip to the store for, but I'd certainly keep the card handy when I'm out and about and will probably take advantage of the free shipping order to send a gift out of state. Thanks Mom Advice for mentioning this!

Spend $50, Get $50 at Sears

This is a hot deal... Spend $50 at Sears on Men's pants/jeans between now and 6/21 and you can mail in your receipt to get a $50 Sears Rewards coupon back that you can spend on men's apparel. Rebate form must be postmarked by 6/30/09.

$25 Restaurant Gift Certificates for $2 thru June 15

Eat out like an Affluent Pauper! From now until June 15, you’ll only pay $2 for $25 gift certificates at Restaurant.com with code PRESENT.

Free Orange Julius June 19th

Go to the Orange Julius site to download your coupon for your free smoothie. I'll head on over an grab a Strawberry Delight. That sounds like a good way to beat the heat!

Free Samples at Panera on June 11

We always love free food, especially when it's from an awesome bakery like Panera. Participating Panera's nationwide are offering free samples until 7:00pm today (some until 9:00pm) of two of their salads (a Cobb salad and a strawberry poppyseed salad) and their frozen drinks (strawberry smoothies, frozen lemonade, and frozen mocha). Yum!
